On Saturday I learned a valuable life lesson: Never wear socks when going down marble stairways--it can be hazardous to your health. Sadly, I had to learn this truism the hard way, but perhaps my word to the wise may spare someone else the joys of bouncing down the stairs (although it was much faster than walking). On a more serious note, we took a field trip to Taipei on Saturday where we visited Taiwan Storyland, a sort of interactive museum similar to the Plano Heritage Farmstead except that it replicates ancient Taiwanese life. It was so much fun stepping into an ancient Taiwanese town--playing their games, eating their food, and even visiting their jail where we all took mug shots, hopefully an event not to be repeated. One of the specialty foods we tried there was a giant mound of shaved ice covered in custard and red bean—not exactly your typical snow cone! The red bean was surprisingly sweeter than expected and the dessert was delicious, though a tad on the messy side when we tried mixing it all together.
After Storyland, we hit the streets and took the Metro and to an area reminiscent of a mini Times Square with big video screens on buildings, bright lights, and bustling activity. We took some time wandering around in one of their GINOURMOUS multi-level department stores and then headed to Tom’s World—a Dave and Buster’sesque video game arcade. Though many of the games were similar to what we have in America, there were some totally unique ones that were so much fun, like a dancing one that sensed hand movements instead of feet and one similar to Wii Rock Band Drums but using Chinese drums! Later that night I ate curry for the first time, which was amazing, and also tried some sort of aloe jello dessert. Finally, we boarded the bus, exhausted from a fantastic day and ready to go home.
